This courageous and brave woman helped the defenseless at huge person risk. Elizabeth “Crazy Bet” Van Lew was a citizen of Richmond, Virginia not Surrey, who helped Union soldiers and slaves during the American Civil War.

Bornon 12th October 1818 to one of Richmond’s wealthiest families Elizabeth Van Lew stayed loyal to the United States after Virginia seceded in the spring of 1861. She helped ease the suffering of Union soldiers, who were being held as prisoners in a warehouse near her home.

As the war continued Elizabeth became an effective espionage agent for the Union passing information from Union prisoners to Generals using a cipher that she created. The information she communicated was crucial to generals, who captured the city of Richmond in 1865. Named “Crazy Bet” by Richmond’s Confederate citizens, who couldn’t understand Elizabeth’s support for slaves and Union soldiers, she was  decorated as a hero by President Ulysees S Grant at the end of the war.

When Guido Fawkes was caught, fuse in hand, under the Houses of Parliament standing next to enough gunpowder to destroy half of Westminister he must have thought that things couldn’t get much worse. He’d not managed to blow up King James I, the Gunpowder plot had failed in the conspiracy to end the government and he was about to be tortured to death. Then again he did manage to leave a legacy in the form of bonfire night. Guy would have been happy being hung, drawn and quartered knowing that every 5th November we celebrate his monumental failure by setting effigies of him on fire and representing what he should have done by shooting fireworks into the air.

A horror story -A young woman in Hackney has a huge fight with her boyfriend and has to leave the flat she shares with him. She’s desperately unhappy and just wants to go home. Man and Van Wimbledon noticed the New Wimbledon Theatre was putting on a performance of Quadrophenia. Man and Van Ealing has always been environmentally conscious but not even our strong environmental policy can compete with the deal made by West London Waste Authority. WLWA have struck a deal with BiogenGreenfinch Ltd to turn Ealing, Hounslow and Richmond’s waste food into electricity. Anything from mouldy bread to rotten eggs will be collected from the doorsteps of the three boroughs and burnt at an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant. The resulting methane will produce enough ‘green electricity’ for the national grid to continuously power 3,00 homes.

Man and Vans Company Owner, Robert Innes, has family ties in Ealing and is very supportive of the project; “Man and Vans has always been committed to providing an efficient, reliable and also environmentally conscious service. My family has been collecting waste food in little green bins for some time now and it’s nice to know our effort is going towards a useful goal.”

Ealing Council, along with those in Hounslow and Richmond, could save millions of pounds used normally for land fill tax. Councillor Irwin Van Colle, chairman of WLWA, said; “AD represents the future of waste management. Diverting waste from landfill like this saves money for council tax payers, helps generate electricity and provides a biofertiliser for use on farmlands.” As well as the cost benefits  AD plants use of methane reduces the emission of the gas into the atmosphere. Methane is a greenhouse gas twenty two time more damaging than carbon dioxide and its refinement and processing will be a positive step towards the slowing of global warming.

This Thursdsay6thAugust will see the Earth pass between the Sun and the Moon resulting in a penumbral lunar eclipse. The eclipse will be completely visible over Africa, Europe and South America.

Advertised as the “Quack is back” the race this Saturday 25th July sees 20,000 little rubber ducks swimming down the Haxall Canal next to Brown Island racing for prizes like a new car.
